Heavy Duty Door Hinges and Stainless Steel Butt Hinges: Sizes, Load and Selection – A Buyer's Guide from the Factory

A heavy duty door hinge is a butt hinge with thicker leaves (usually 3–6 mm), a larger size (4–5 in) and ball bearings in the knuckle, made to carry heavy or frequently used doors without sagging. HIPAD manufactures door hinges in SS304 and SS201 stainless steel, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy and steel, from 2 to 5 in and 2 to 6 mm thick, with 180° opening. Door factories, aluminum and uPVC fabricators and hardware distributors in 60+ countries order them from us as standard models or made to drawing.

What Is a Door Hinge, and What Makes It Heavy Duty?

A door hinge joins the door leaf to the frame and lets it swing. The common type is the butt hinge: two flat leaves, one recessed into the door edge and one into the frame, joined by a pin through a row of knuckles. Its size is given as height × open width, for example 4 × 4 in (102 × 102 mm).

A hinge becomes heavy duty through four things together: thicker leaves, a larger size, ball bearings or bearing washers between the knuckles, and enough hinges per door. Leaf thickness alone is not a load rating. The pin, knuckles, screws and the material the door is made of all decide how much the hinge can carry.

In Spanish-speaking markets door hinges are bisagras para puertas (bisagras de acero inoxidable in stainless steel); in Brazil they are dobradiças para porta or dobradiças de inox.

Step 2 · Size

Door Hinge Sizes: 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 and 5 Inch

Kurze Antwort: most interior doors 35–40 mm thick use 3.5 in (89 mm) hinges; standard 44 mm doors use 4 in or 4.5 in (102–114 mm) hinges; heavy, wide or 50 mm+ doors use 5 in (127 mm) heavy duty hinges. The size is height × open width; leaf thickness is chosen separately by door weight.

Heavy Duty Door Hinges: How Many Hinges and How Much Load

Kurze Antwort: use 2 hinges on doors up to 1.5 m high, 3 hinges up to 2.3 m and 4 hinges up to 3 m, then add one for every extra 750 mm. Doors over about 60 kg need ball bearing hinges of at least 4.5 in with 3 mm+ leaves; doors over about 100 kg need 5 in heavy duty hinges with 4–6 mm leaves, four bearings and a fourth hinge.

Number and position of hinges by door height Three door elevations. A door up to 1.5 metres high with 2 hinges, a standard door up to 2.3 metres with 3 hinges, and a tall door up to 3 metres with 4 hinges. The top hinge sits about 125 millimetres below the top, the bottom hinge about 250 millimetres above the floor, and the others are evenly spaced. ≤ 1.5 m · 2 hinges ≤ 2.3 m · 3 hinges ≤ 3.0 m · 4 hinges Top ≈ 125 mm from the top · bottom ≈ 250 mm from the floor · others evenly spaced

Planning guide. EN 1935 classifies single-axis hinges by the mass of the test door (with 200,000 cycles for door grades); the column is a reference, not a HIPAD certification claim. We confirm the load for the exact model, door size and number of hinges before you order.
  • Width matters as much as mass: a wide door levers more force on the top hinge, so add a hinge or step up a size on doors over 1000 mm wide.
  • Door closers add load and cycles: use ball bearing hinges and step up one size.
  • Fixing: the hinge is only as strong as its screws and the door material. Use the full screw set, and through-bolts or reinforcement plates on hollow steel and aluminum doors.

Door Hinge FAQ

What is a heavy duty door hinge?

A heavy duty door hinge is a butt hinge with thicker leaves (usually 3–6 mm), a larger size (4.5–5 in) and ball bearings in the knuckle. It is used on heavy, wide or frequently used doors such as entrance, commercial, steel and fire-rated doors.

How many hinges does a door need?

Use 2 hinges on doors up to 1.5 m high, 3 hinges up to about 2.3 m and 4 hinges up to about 3 m, then add one for every extra 750 mm. Add a hinge on wide or heavy doors and doors with closers.

What size hinge do I need for a door?

Most 35–40 mm interior doors use 3.5 in (89 mm) hinges, standard 44 mm doors use 4 in or 4.5 in (102–114 mm) hinges, and heavy or 50 mm+ doors use 5 in (127 mm) heavy duty hinges.

How much weight can a door hinge hold?

It depends on size, leaf thickness, bearings, number of hinges and fixing. As a guide, three 4 in ball bearing hinges with 2.5–3 mm leaves suit doors up to about 60 kg, and four 5 in heavy duty hinges with 4–6 mm leaves suit doors up to about 120–160 kg. We confirm the load for each model.

Is 304 or 201 stainless steel better for door hinges?

SS304 resists corrosion better because it contains more nickel, so use it for exterior, bathroom, coastal and humid areas. SS201 costs less and is suitable for dry interior doors. HIPAD makes hinges in both grades.

Are ball bearing hinges better than plain hinges?

Yes, for most doors. Ball bearings reduce friction and wear in the knuckle, so the door swings quietly and does not sag as quickly. Use two bearings for interior doors and four for heavy duty and commercial doors.

What hinges are used on aluminum and uPVC doors?

Profile doors use surface-mounted 3D adjustable hinges, two-wing slot hinges or lift-off aluminum hinges that fit the profile, instead of mortised butt hinges. They can be adjusted after hanging and are color-matched to the profile.

What is the MOQ for door hinges?

MOQ starts at 500 pcs for stainless ball bearing hinges, 1,000–2,000 pcs for aluminum and 3D hinges and 5,000 pcs for uPVC butt hinges. Samples take 3–7 days and production 20–25 working days.

Can you make hinges to our drawing with our logo?

Yes. We make hinges to your size, thickness, hole pattern, bearings, material and finish, and add logo stamping and private-label packing, even for small quantities.
