A shower door hinge is a clamp-style pivot that holds a frameless glass door and lets it swing. One leaf clamps onto the glass through a drilled hole or notch, with rubber or PVC gaskets between the metal and the glass. The other leaf fixes either to the wall (wall-to-glass hinge) or to a fixed glass panel (glass-to-glass hinge).
The angle in the name, 90°, 135° or 180°, is the angle between the two surfaces the hinge joins, not how far the door opens. Most frameless shower doors hang on two hinges, and taller or heavier doors use three. The same product is also called a glass shower hinge, frameless shower door hinge, shower screen hinge (Australia), shower enclosure hinge (UK) or bisagra para mampara (Spanish).

Choose a hinge by two things: what the door hangs from (the wall or a fixed glass panel) and the angle between those two surfaces. The plan views below show each hinge seen from above.
Fix the door directly to the wall with the door at a right angle to the wall. Offset back plate models keep the screws beside the hinge body. Full back plate models cover the fixing screws for a cleaner look.
Mount on a short wall return or pillar so that the door hangs in the same plane as the wall. Often called a single-shaft 180° hinge.
Join the door to a fixed glass panel in the same line, so no wall fixing is needed on the hinge side. This is the standard hinge for inline door-and-panel showers.
Connect a door to a fixed panel at a right angle for corner (L-shaped) shower enclosures, with the door on the return panel.
Carry the door between two angled fixed panels in neo-angle (diamond) shower enclosures, where panels meet at 135°.
Self-closing (soft-close) hinges in 90° and 180° versions return the door to closed. Long hinges with 110 mm and 225 mm leaves spread the load on tall doors. Semicircular styles suit rounded design lines.

Quick answer: most frameless shower doors up to 900 mm wide and 2000 mm tall in 8–10 mm glass use two hinges. Use three hinges when the door is taller than about 2000 mm or heavier than about 45 kg (for example, most 12 mm doors wider than 800 mm). Tempered glass weighs about 2.5 kg per m² per millimeter of thickness.

Stainless steel hinges are made in 304 as standard, and in 316 for coastal and wet-area projects. Brass bodies take PVD and electroplated colors very well, which suits gold, rose gold and bronze collections. Zinc alloy keeps cost down for large budget orders. Material documents and test reports are available for each model.
Cover caps for the clamping screws come in polished chrome, bright gold, satin nickel and matte black. They can match the hinge or contrast with it.

The gasket is the soft layer between the metal hinge and the tempered glass. It spreads the clamping force so the glass is not stressed at one point, and it stops the door from slipping.

A wall-to-glass hinge fixes the shower door to a wall with a base plate. A glass-to-glass hinge joins the door to a fixed glass panel, at 90° for corner showers, 135° for neo-angle showers or 180° for an inline door and panel.
Most frameless shower doors up to 900 mm wide and 2000 mm tall in 8–10 mm glass need two hinges. Use three hinges for doors taller than about 2000 mm or heavier than about 45 kg, which includes most 12 mm doors wider than 800 mm.
A pair of standard HIPAD wall-to-glass hinges is recommended for doors up to about 45 kg and 900 mm wide, and glass-to-glass pairs for up to about 40 kg. Heavier or taller doors should use three hinges or long heavy-duty hinges. Final ratings are confirmed against your drawing.

304 stainless steel suits most residential and hotel showers. Choose 316 for coastal cities, pools, spas and very humid bathrooms, because it resists chlorides better. Brass is the premium choice for gold and bronze finishes, and zinc alloy is the budget option.
