Sliding Door Rollers: Types, Sizes, Bearings and Load – A Complete Guide from the Roller Factory

A sliding door roller is the wheel-and-bearing unit that carries the weight of a sliding door or window and lets it run along a track. Choosing one means matching five things: roller type, wheel material, groove profile, bearing and rated load. HIPAD has made bearings and rollers since 2000 and supplies sliding door rollers, window rollers, roller strips, embedded rollers and bearing wheels to OEM and wholesale buyers in 60+ countries. This guide explains each choice and links to every HIPAD roller family.

What Is a Sliding Door Roller?

A sliding door roller is a small assembly of a wheel, a ball bearing and a housing (also called a carriage or bracket). Bottom-rolling rollers sit inside the lower rail of the door or window sash and run on a track in the frame. Top-hung rollers hang the door from an overhead track, as on barn doors, glass partitions and many sliding shower doors.

The roller decides how heavy a door can be, how quiet and light it feels, and how long it lasts. A roller that is too weak, uses the wrong wheel material or does not match the track profile wears flat, jumps the track or seizes. Rollers are also called sliding door wheels, door runners (UK), carriages, patio door rollers, roldanas (Spanish) and roldanas para portas or rodízios (Portuguese).

Step 1 · Roller type

Types of Sliding Door Rollers

Roller type follows the door system. Bottom-rolling rollers carry the panel from below; top-hung rollers carry it from above. The drawings show each type in cross-section.

Sliding door roller types in cross-section Five sections: a single-wheel roller in the bottom rail of a door, a tandem roller with two wheels, an embedded roller hidden in the profile, a multi-wheel roller strip, and a top-hung roller hanging the door from an overhead track. Step 2 · Wheel material

Nylon vs POM vs PU vs Steel Roller Wheels

Quick answer: nylon is the standard for quiet windows and most doors; POM runs smoother with less wear; PU is the quietest on metal tracks; steel and stainless steel carry the heaviest doors and outdoor gates. Match the wheel to the track material and the door weight, not to appearance.

Wheel materialNoiseLoadWear on aluminum trackBest forWatch out for
Nylon (PA)QuietLight to mediumGentleSliding windows, residential doors, wardrobesCan absorb moisture; flat spots if overloaded
POM (acetal)QuietMediumGentleSmooth, low-friction doors and windowsCosts more than nylon
PU (polyurethane tread)QuietestMedium to heavyVery gentlePremium patio doors, glass partitionsTread can wear in dirty tracks
SteelLouderHeavyHarder on soft tracksLarge and heavy doors on steel or stainless tracksNeeds corrosion protection
Stainless steelLouderHeavyHarder on soft tracksBathrooms, coastal and outdoor doorsHigher cost

Nylon wheels are made in many colors: white, black, blue, yellow, orange and purple are all common, and many markets use color to tell systems apart. Wheel color is free to choose on OEM orders.

Step 3 · Groove and track

Match the Wheel Groove to the Track

The tread shape of the wheel must match the top of the track. A wrong match is the most common cause of noise, uneven wear and doors jumping off the track.

Wheel profileRuns onStrength
U-groove (round)Round rail or round-top trackSelf-centering, smooth
V-grooveV-shaped or angle trackPrecise guiding, low play
Flat treadFlat track or flat ribTolerant of small misalignment
Flanged (H-type)Flat rib between two flangesHolds the wheel on the track

Send a 100 mm piece of your track or a profile drawing. We match the groove, wheel diameter and housing height to it.

Step 4 · Bearing

Roller Bearings: ZZ vs RS and Common Sizes

Most door and window rollers use a miniature deep-groove ball bearing pressed into the wheel. The bearing sets the smoothness and life of the roller far more than the wheel itself. HIPAD started in 2000 as a bearing assembler, and bearings remain an in-house product line.

Single-bearing wheels suit light doors. Double-bearing wheels, or two wheels per housing, keep the wheel square to the track under heavy load and resist wobble.

Step 5 · Load

How to Choose a Roller for the Door Weight

Quick answer: work out the panel weight, divide it between the roller units, and choose rollers whose rated load is at least 1.5 times the share each one carries for daily use (1.25 times is the minimum for light residential doors). Most sliding panels run on two roller units, one near each end.

Estimate the panel weight

  • Glass weighs about 2.5 kg per m² per millimeter of thickness. Count both panes in double glazing: 5 + 5 mm = 10 mm of glass.
  • Add about 20–30% for an aluminum frame, or weigh one finished sash.
  • Example: a 1000 × 2200 mm patio sash with 5 + 12A + 5 mm double glazing: 2.2 m² × 25 kg = 55 kg of glass, plus about 25% frame = about 69 kg. Each of two rollers carries about 35 kg; with a 1.5 safety factor, choose rollers rated for at least 52 kg each, so a tandem roller is the safe choice.

Send the sash size, glass build-up and profile drawing. We recommend the roller and confirm its rated load by test.

Roller typeTypical panel weight (2 roller units)
Window roller, single nylon wheel20–40 kg
Wardrobe and interior door roller20–40 kg
Single-wheel door roller with bearing40–80 kg
Embedded door roller60–120 kg
Tandem (double-wheel) door roller80–150 kg
Top-hung multi-wheel glass rollerUp to 100–120 kg (HIPAD 4-wheel and multi-wheel hangers)
Roller strip, 4–8 wheels120–300 kg
Steel-wheel heavy-duty roller150–300 kg and above
Typical planning ranges for one sliding panel. The rated load of each HIPAD model is confirmed against your drawing and by load testing before production.
Replacement & OEM

How to Measure a Sliding Door Roller

For a replacement roller or an OEM match, measure the old roller with calipers, not a ruler. These dimensions decide whether a roller fits the profile cavity and the track.

  1. Housing length (L), width (W) and height (H), with the adjustment screw fully in.
  2. Wheel diameter (D) and wheel width (T).
  3. Groove profile: U, V, flat or flanged, and the groove width.
  4. Adjustment range: how far the wheel moves up and down.
  5. Fixing: screw hole positions, clip-in tabs or end-cap fixing.
  6. Track: the shape and width of the track top, and its material.
  7. Door: panel weight, glass build-up and daily use.

Rollers for regional profile systems

Sliding door and window profiles differ by region, and so do the rollers that fit them. HIPAD supplies rollers matched to local aluminum systems for buyers in Latin America (including Mexico, Peru and Brazil), the Middle East (including Iraq) and Central Asia, among them four-wheel inline strips for Middle East style systems and South American door profiles. Send a profile section or sample roller and we match the housing to the cavity.

Installation, Adjustment and Maintenance

  1. Clean the track and check it is straight and undamaged before fitting new rollers.
  2. Fit the rollers near each end of the bottom rail, usually 50–100 mm from the corners.
  3. Lift the sash onto the track and lower it carefully so the wheels sit in the groove.
  4. Turn the adjustment screws to raise the sash until it clears the track evenly and the gaps at the frame are parallel.
  5. Slide the door through its full travel and check it runs quietly without rubbing.
  6. Keep tracks clean. Vacuum dirt every few months; do not use heavy grease, which collects grit.

Sliding Door Roller FAQ

What are the main types of sliding door rollers?

The main types are single-wheel rollers, tandem (double-wheel) rollers, embedded rollers hidden in the profile, multi-wheel roller strips, bracket or hanging rollers, and top-hung rollers that carry the door from an overhead track. The door system and the panel weight decide which type fits.

Which is better for sliding door rollers, nylon or steel wheels?

Nylon wheels are quieter and gentler on aluminum tracks, so they suit windows and most residential doors. Steel and stainless steel wheels carry heavier loads and suit large doors on steel or stainless tracks. POM and PU wheels sit in between, with smoother and quieter running than standard nylon.

How much weight can a sliding door roller hold?

It depends on the roller type. As a planning guide, window rollers carry about 20–40 kg per sash, single-wheel door rollers 40–80 kg per panel, tandem rollers 80–150 kg and multi-wheel roller strips 120–300 kg. Choose rollers rated for at least 1.5 times the share of weight each one carries.

How do I measure a sliding door roller for replacement?

Measure the housing length, width and height, the wheel diameter and width, the groove profile, the adjustment range and the fixing method, and note the track shape. Sending the old roller or a profile section is the fastest way to get an exact match.

What is the difference between ZZ and RS bearings in rollers?

ZZ bearings have two metal shields and run with lower friction, which suits indoor doors and windows. RS bearings have rubber seals that keep out fine dust and water, which suits patio doors, bathrooms and coastal sites.

Why does my sliding door jump off the track?

The usual causes are a wheel groove that does not match the track, worn wheels, or rollers set at different heights. Match the groove profile to the track, replace worn rollers and adjust both rollers so the door sits level.

Can you make rollers to match our profile or sample?

Yes. Send a sample roller, a profile section or a drawing. We match the housing to the cavity and choose the wheel material, color, groove and bearing, using our 2000+ existing molds or a new private mold.

What is the MOQ and lead time for OEM rollers?

MOQ starts from 1000 pcs and depends on the model. Samples from existing molds take 5–7 days and mass production 20–25 working days. Logo stamping and private-label packaging are available even for small quantities.

Is HIPAD a roller manufacturer or a trading company?

HIPAD is a manufacturer that started in 2000 with bearing assembly and produces rollers with its own injection molding machines, molds and assembly lines. HIPAD is ISO 9001 certified. Qingdao Hipad International Trade Co., Ltd. handles export.
