What Is Glass Door Hardware?

A frameless glass door is a single sheet of tempered glass with no frame. Because the glass cannot be screwed into, every fitting clamps onto it. The most common commercial set uses a floor spring set in the floor under the door: a bottom patch fitting on the lower corner of the glass sits on the floor spring spindle, and a top patch fitting turns on a top pivot in the transom or ceiling. A pull handle goes through holes in the glass, and a lock patch or floor lock secures the door.

Where the floor cannot be cut, a door closer or a concealed frameless closer does the closing instead. The same hardware is used on shop fronts, office entrances, hotel lobbies, glass partitions and bathroom doors. In Spanish the floor spring is a bisagra hidráulica de piso ou freno hidráulico, patch fittings are zapatas ou herrajes para puerta de vidrio templado, and the door closer is a cierrapuertas.

Floor Spring vs Door Closer vs Pivot vs Concealed Glass Door Closer

Réponse rapide : use a floor spring for heavy, busy frameless glass entrances where the floor can be cut; a surface door closer for framed, timber and steel doors; a pivot system for oversized or architectural doors; and a concealed frameless glass door closer when the floor cannot be cut and the glass door is up to 100 kg.

Step 2 · Floor spring size

How to Choose a Floor Spring by Door Weight and Size

Choose a floor spring whose maximum door weight et maximum leaf size both cover your door. Tempered glass weighs about 2,5 kg par m² par millimètre: a 1000 × 2400 mm door in 12 mm glass weighs about 72 kg before fittings, so a 100–120 kg floor spring leaves a safe margin.

  • All HIPAD floor springs have two-stage speed control: one valve for the closing swing, one for the final latching.
  • They suit single and double doors in glass, timber and uPVC.
  • Check the floor depth: floor spring boxes are about 42–70 mm deep.

Step 3 · Door closer size

How to Choose a Door Closer

Door closers are sized by door weight and width. HIPAD surface closers cover doors from 25 to 110 kg in square, round and triangular bodies, and concealed closers cover 35–95 kg doors. Most models are available with or without 90° hold-open.

Glass Door Hardware FAQ
