Glass Railing Hardware: Systems, Spigots, Posts, Clamps and Handrail Fittings – A Buyer's Guide from the Factory

Glass railing hardware is the stainless steel that holds a glass balustrade in place: spigots or posts at the base, glass clamps or standoffs on the panel edge, and a handrail or top rail with its brackets and fittings. HIPAD manufactures this hardware in SS304 and SS316 for 8–15 mm tempered and laminated glass, for balconies, stairs, pool fences and commercial atriums. Distributors, railing fabricators and contractors in 60+ countries buy complete systems or single components from our factory.

What Is Glass Railing Hardware?

A glass railing, also called a glass balustrade, glass guardrail or barandilla de vidrio, is a safety barrier made of toughened glass panels. The glass does the guarding; the hardware decides how the glass is fixed, how much it can carry and how long it lasts outdoors.

There are three main ways to fix the glass. In a frameless system the panels stand in spigots or a base channel with no posts. In a post-and-clamp system, stainless steel posts carry the load and glass clamps hold the panels between them. In a side-mounted system the glass or posts are fixed to the face of the slab edge, which keeps the floor clear. A handrail or top rail can be added to any of them, and many building codes require one.

Step 1 · System

Types of Glass Railing Systems Compared

Quick answer: choose spigots for the cleanest frameless look on balconies and pool fences, posts and clamps for the easiest installation and lower glass cost, and side-mounted fixing when the floor must stay clear or the slab edge is the only solid fixing point.

Step 3 · Height and safety

Glass Railing Height and Load Requirements

Guard height, load and glass type are set by local building codes, and an engineer should confirm the design for each project. The table shows common minimum heights that buyers ask us about; always check the current code where the railing will be installed.

MarketCommon minimum guard height
USA (IBC / IRC)42 in (1067 mm) for commercial guards; 36 in (914 mm) in most homes
UK (Approved Document K)900 mm for stairs and internal landings; 1100 mm for external balconies and edges
Australia (NCC)1000 mm for balustrades; pool fences usually 1200 mm (AS 1926.1)
EU, Latin America, Middle EastSet nationally; typically 900–1100 mm

Rules that shape the hardware

  • Glass type: use toughened (tempered) safety glass. Many codes require laminated glass, or a handrail that links the panels, for frameless balustrades so the barrier stays in place if one pane breaks.
  • Loads: codes set a line load on the top of the barrier and a point load on the infill. Spigot and post size, spacing and fixing must be designed for them.
  • Spigot layout: most frameless panels use two spigots per panel, set in from each edge; wide or tall panels need three. The engineer fixes the final positions.
  • Gaps: openings between panels and at the floor are limited by code, often to 100 mm or a 4-inch sphere in the USA.
  • Glass weight: about 2.5 kg per m² per millimeter. A 1000 × 1100 mm panel in 12 mm glass weighs about 33 kg.

Send your drawing, glass build-up and target code. We match spigot, post and clamp sizes to it and supply test reports per model.

Step 4 · Material and finish

304 or 316 Stainless Steel for Railings?

Quick answer: use 316 outdoors near the sea, around pools and in humid tropical climates; 304 is fine indoors and in dry inland areas. Chlorides from sea air and pool water attack 304 and cause brown "tea staining".

LocationGradeFinish tip
Indoor stairs, atriums, offices304Brushed or mirror
Outdoor, inland city304 or 316Brushed, cleaned regularly
Coastal, within sight of the sea316Mirror or fine brushed resists staining better
Pool fences and spa areas316Rinse off pool water and salt regularly
Tropical, high humidity316Avoid rough finishes that trap dirt

Spigots, posts, clamps and handrail fittings are finished to match, so a project gets one color from one factory. Other PVD colors are available for private-label ranges.

Installation Overview

  1. Confirm the code, glass build-up and engineer's layout, then order glass with holes or notches cut before tempering.
  2. Set out spigot or post positions with a laser line; check the slab for reinforcement, edges and level.
  3. Fix spigots or posts with the specified anchors or core-drill and grout; for side mounting, fix into sound concrete or steel.
  4. Fit gaskets, set the glass on setting blocks and tighten clamps or spigot screws evenly to the given torque.
  5. Plumb and align the panels, keeping gaps even, then fit the handrail or top rail and its fittings.
  6. Fit cover plates and caps, clean off fingerprints and site dust, and hand over cleaning instructions.

Installation should be done by a qualified railing or glazing contractor.

Glass Railing Hardware FAQ

What hardware is needed for a glass railing?

A glass railing needs a base fixing (spigots, posts or side-mount fittings), fittings that hold the glass (glass clamps, standoffs or the spigot itself), gaskets to protect the glass, and usually a handrail or top rail with brackets, elbows and end caps.

What is the difference between a spigot and a post glass railing?

In a spigot system the glass panels stand in short spigots and carry the load themselves, so the railing looks frameless. In a post system, stainless steel posts carry the load and glass clamps hold the panels between them, which allows thinner glass and easier installation.

Should I use 304 or 316 stainless steel for glass railings?

Use 316 stainless steel near the sea, around swimming pools and in humid tropical climates, because it resists chlorides better. 304 is suitable for indoor railings and dry inland locations.

What glass thickness is used for glass railings?

Post and clamp systems usually use 8–12 mm toughened glass. Side-mounted and standard spigot systems use 10–12 mm, and heavy-duty frameless spigots take 12–15 mm. Many codes require laminated glass for frameless balustrades, so the final build-up depends on the code and the engineer.

How high should a glass railing be?

It depends on the local code. Common minimums are 42 in (1067 mm) for commercial guards in the USA, 1100 mm for external balconies in the UK, 1000 mm in Australia, and 1200 mm for pool fences in Australia. Always check the current code for the project location.

How many spigots does a frameless glass panel need?

Most frameless panels use two spigots, set in from each edge of the panel. Wider or taller panels, or panels in high wind areas, need three. The project engineer confirms the spigot size, number and positions.

Can HIPAD supply a complete glass railing system?

Yes. HIPAD supplies spigots, posts, glass clamps, standoffs, handrails and handrail fittings in matching grades and finishes, packed by project area or as complete kits. The glass itself is usually sourced locally by the installer.

What is the lead time for railing hardware?

Samples of existing models take 5–7 days and mass production 20–25 working days. Custom sizes, private molds, laser logos and private-label packing are available, even for small quantities.

Is HIPAD a manufacturer or a trading company?

HIPAD is a manufacturer founded in 2000 in Qingdao, China, producing stainless steel railing hardware since 2020 with in-house tooling, 2000+ mold sets and QC. HIPAD is ISO 9001 certified. Qingdao Hipad International Trade Co., Ltd. handles export.
