Glass Railing Hardware: Systems, Spigots, Posts, Clamps and Handrail Fittings – A Buyer's Guide from the Factory

A glass railing needs a base fixing (spigots, posts or side-mount fittings), fittings that hold the glass (glass clamps, standoffs or the spigot itself), gaskets to protect the glass, and usually a handrail or top rail with brackets, elbows and end caps.

In a spigot system the glass panels stand in short spigots and carry the load themselves, so the railing looks frameless. In a post system, stainless steel posts carry the load and glass clamps hold the panels between them, which allows thinner glass and easier installation.

Use 316 stainless steel near the sea, around swimming pools and in humid tropical climates, because it resists chlorides better. 304 is suitable for indoor railings and dry inland locations.

Post and clamp systems usually use 8–12 mm toughened glass. Side-mounted and standard spigot systems use 10–12 mm, and heavy-duty frameless spigots take 12–15 mm. Many codes require laminated glass for frameless balustrades, so the final build-up depends on the code and the engineer.

It depends on the local code. Common minimums are 42 in (1067 mm) for commercial guards in the USA, 1100 mm for external balconies in the UK, 1000 mm in Australia, and 1200 mm for pool fences in Australia. Always check the current code for the project location.

Most frameless panels use two spigots, set in from each edge of the panel. Wider or taller panels, or panels in high wind areas, need three. The project engineer confirms the spigot size, number and positions.
